Preventing job search burnout

If you're anything like me, you have trouble slowing down to rest sometimes. Turns out it's just as easy to be "always on" when you love the work you do as when you have a needy boss sending 9PM pings...

The job search is no different. At any given time during a career transition, you have a million thoughts going through your head:

  • Where are all the good opportunities?
  • Wait, what do I even want next?
  • And how do I tell my story?
  • Who do I need to network with?
  • What's the best message to send them?

And then:

  • Oh hell yes, I got an interview!!!
  • I've got to respond to that person
  • I need to do more research first
  • Gotta squeeze in this interview prep

It feels impossible to unplug.

I got a nice lesson from the Universe on the importance of disconnecting recently.

I went to close out the 213 Safari tabs on my phone, and had a lightbulb moment, "OMG this is how my brain feels. I feel like I have 100 tabs open and I just want to close all of the tabs."

I felt a sigh of relief just acknowledging it.

I shared this lesson with my community, and everyone could relate.

With all of the things we need to do, our brains are doing a lot of context switching. We hop from task to task, struggling to keep track of everything left unfinished.

Job search activities are just one part of your plate. Other work commitments stack up too. Pings from your team or clients pop in, always needing what feels like urgent attention (even though we're not saving lives here, thank goodness).

AND we need to artfully balance personal life priorities too — you have to get to work out, quality time with family, a night to dinner with friends, take care of your mental health. Even stacking the things that are good for us get overwhelming fast.

Add in the level of dopamine addiction we have these days, and it's no wonder we're all feeling pulled in a million directions. We're on our phones, emails, Slack, DMs constantly.

The question remains: How do we manage it all?

The answer: Make time to do nothing.

I know it's difficult to disconnect when you're in job search mode. You want to be plugged in to ensure you're not missing any good opportunities.

If you're not careful, this always-on mentality will lead you straight to burnout.

Some weeks may feel like a sprint (like when one of my clients crushed 12 interviews in 1 week... craziness) — but your career transition is more like a marathon.

By the end of the week, there are a lot of open tabs in there.

My challenge for you this weekend: Close out those open tabs.

Carve out at least 1 hour for some quiet space. Use that time to reconnect with your body, clear your mind, take some deep breaths. Do some yoga, meditate, walk in a park — whatever works for you.

Remember the activities you used to do that brought you peace that you "don't have time for"? Let's get back to those. Prioritize at least 1 Power Up activity this weekend to help you recharge.

The weekend is a great time to close the tabs and do a mental reset. Then, you can start off next week with a clean slate, with full processing capability to send those outreach messages and crush those interviews.

I was sitting at my laptop, reflecting on how the holiday season always marks the end of another year, when I caught myself doing something high achievers do all the time: Focusing on where I fell short while completely overlooking how far I've come. Like my client who landed the $150K role she'd been gunning for, only to immediately start worrying about if she was really ready for it. When you're in the messy middle of working toward your next career goal — that time in between where you are...

Looking for a job in 2024 is like starting a business — especially if you’re a generalist. After building my coaching business for the last 18 months, I can tell you why this is painfully true (and what to do about it). Picture this: It’s February 2023, and I’m doing that thing where you say you’re starting a business but really you’re just… thinking about starting a business. I got sick of waiting for "the perfect time" and started taking action a few months later. After growing my business...
